Founded by Hans Richter, a pioneer of abstract animated film, G featured works by some of the important names in the advanced cultures of Europe: Hans Arp, Walter Benjamin, Theo van Doesburg, Viking Eggeling, Naum Gabo, Werner Graeff, George Grosz, Hugo Häring, Raoul Hausmann, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Frederick Kiesler, El Lissitzky, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Antoine Pevsner, Man Ray, and Tristan Tzara. This edition, the first in English translation, preserves the original design by Lissitzky, Richter, and Graeff, and includes essays that explore the role of the journal in its time and in relation to contemporary culture.

Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) is regarded as one of the leading theorists of the Neues Bauen movement in pre-War Germany, and of modern, functional urbanism. This set of accomplishments still dominates the public image of the architect, urban planner, teacher and art critic to this day. His development beyond that period has long been neglected. The essays in this collection seek to fill this gap, offering an exciting and wide-ranging new perspective on the work of a central protagonist of modernism. Until now, most critical studies of Hilberseimer's work came from his place of exile in Chicago and his work in Germany/Europe and the USA tended to be viewed separately; this volume is the first to attempt to end this separation and encourage a complete overview of is work.

In the 1920s, the urban theory of Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) redefined architecture’s relationship to the city. His proposal for a high-rise city, where leisure, labor and circulation would be vertically integrated, both frightened his contemporaries and offered a trenchant critique of the dynamics of the capitalist metropolis. Hilberseimer’s Groszstadt-architektur (Metropolisarchitecture) is presented here for the first time in English translation. Two additional essays frame this international cross-section of metropolitan architecture: “Der Wille zur Architektur” (The Will to Architecture) and “Vorschlag zur City-Bebauung” (Proposal for City-Building). The propositions assembled here encourage us to reconsider mobility, concentration and the scale of architectural intervention in our own era of urban expansion. In 1931, in response to the Great Depression and subsequent collapse of the building industry, Martin Wagner (1885–1957), then head of planning for Berlin, formulated plans for an adaptable micro-house called “the growing house.” Working with Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Erich Mendelssohn, Hans Poelzig and Hans Scharoun, the growing house was designed to be modified with the changing socioeconomic circumstances of its inhabitants, providing only what was necessary and expedient. Wagner’s coruscating foreword outlining his proposals for a new social, technical and economic fabric shifting the dwelling to the center of the world is published here for the first time. Historical and contemporary black-and-white and color illustrations, drawings, plans and photographs of the prototype are accompanied by commentary from Franziska Bollerey, Ludovica Scarpa, Tom Avermaete and Tatjana Schneider, demonstrating that the growing house is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago.
