Description:
This project series documents the plano de Doedijnstraat, the residential settlement in Schilderswijk, The Hague, The Netherlands. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 63/80. The office assigned the date 1989 for this project. In 1993 Siza was awarded the Berlage Prize for this residential project of 238 flats. The project was part of an urban renewal program in The Hague for which Siza had already worked on other projects: the urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5, Schilderswijk-West and Punt en Komma social housing; the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk; and the Van der Vennepark. Documenting this project are sketches, studies, elevations, plans and details. Textual documentation includes correspondence, such as letters to and from Siza, letters to Jeoron Geurst (from the associated architectural firm Geurst & Schulze architekten), and letters to and from project architect Carlos Castenheira. Furthermore, there is correspondence to and from members of the Woningbouwvereniging and several letters from Ing. J. van Gulik (project leader). Other documentation includes cost estimates and meeting minutes. Also included in this project series are negatives, photographs and slides documenting the model, site and various dwellings.

Description:
This project series documents the Reconstrução do Chiado in Lisbon, Portugal. The office's archives identified this project as 58/80. The office assigned the dates 1988-1998 for this project. Chiado is a historic district in the center of Lisbon, Portugal, and a linchpin between the Baixa Pombalina and the Bairro Alto Hill. After a devastating earthquake in 1755, the city was rebuilt and reorganized by military architects and engineers. The Pombaline style, specific to Lisbon, includes pre-fabricated anti-seismic structure and sober style. On August 25, 1988, a fire started in one of the oldest department stores of Lisbon, the Grandella building, damaging partially or totally seventeen buildings, between the Rua Do Carmo, Rua Nova do Almada and Rua Garret. Álvaro Siza was selected by the mayor of Lisbon, Nuno Krus Abecasis, to reorganize and rebuild the district. After public consultations, it was decided to maintain the historic image of the Chiado by restoring the façades and ornamentations. Adjustments by Siza include introducing residential and cultural functions to the district, with the exception of the Grandes Armazéns building and the Grandella building, which had their own program. As Siza said himself: "It’s not about drawing a new section of the city, but rather just introducing corrections and adjustments, reinforce the whole city." Siza started to work on the layout plan in January 1989 and presented it to the municipal authorities of Lisbon in April 1990. The reconstruction of the Chiado had several goals, but there were two general concepts behind his plan. The aesthetic aspect of the program included restorations of buildings to reinstitute the historical spirit of the district. The spatial reorganization, in a really Siza way, focused on finding architectural solutions that would bring more functionality to the city. The idea was to think of the reconstruction in relation with the urban revitalization of the Baixa Pombalina and to maintain as much as possible the patrimonial value of the district. Siza's intentions were to stimulate the commercial and residential functions of the district, which was on the decline over the last years prior to the fire. Some of the measures taken were: improving the traffic fluidity; creating parking spaces for the future residents and shopkeepers, improving the access to stores and others facilities, creating a staired passageway between Rua do Crucifixo and Rua Nova do Almada, and a pedestrian passageway between the rear of those buildings giving onto Rua Garret and Rua Do Carmo. They also studied the integration of a subway station to the district. Municipal authorities decided to rebuild or restore the original facades, reorganize the interior and improve the safety of the buildings. The biggest challenge was to convert the Grandes Armazéns do Chiado into a hotel and rebuild the Grandella with its original 20th century façade, while rethinking the interior division(s?) in order to add different functions to the building, including offices and leisure and cultural facilities. The reconstruction plan was divided into six distinct blocks: Bloco A, Bloco B, Bloco C, Bloco D, Bloco E, and Bloco F. Each Block includes several buildings and each was individually numbered. The first three blocks (A, B, C) were the most damaged, and required massive work, stonework, technical and mechanical work, replacing doors and windows, as well as repainting, repaving, and restoring decorative elements. Reconstruction for Blocks D, E, and F, which are less documented in the fonds, focused on making changes that complemented the neighboring building. Siza also worked specifically on the Edifício Castro e Melo, Câmara Chaves, Edifício Leonel, Edifício Grandella, and Recuperaçäo do Edifício dos Grandes Armazéns. The rest of the buildings were restored by other architects and firms. "Chiado" is often referring to two different things: the districts between the Baixa Pombalina and the Bairro Alto Hill, as well as a building, also known as the Hotel do Chiado. To avoid confusion, in this finding aid the term "Chiado" is always referring to the district, and the Chiado building will be referred to as the Grandes Armazéns do Chiado building. To fully understand the nature of the project, it is important to comprehend the reconstruction of the Chiado as a whole project, rather than as individual components. Siza himself saw the Chiado as one big building. Bloco A (plots 7,8,9,10,11 and 20) Bloco B (plots 12, 13, 14/15 and 16) Bloco C (plots 2, 3 and 6) Bloco D (plots 4 and 5) Bloco E (plots 1,17,18 and 19) This project series includes eleven subseries : Subseries 1) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS1 Master plans and exterior spaces, Reconstruction of Chiado, 2) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS2 Bloco A, 3) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS3 Edificio Camara Chaves building, 4) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS4 Edifício Castro e Melo, 5) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS5 Bloco B, 6) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS6– Bloco, B Chiado, Edifício Leonel, Lisboa, Portugal (1988-1998), 7) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS7 Bloco C, 8) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS8 - Bloco C, Chiado, Recuperaçäo do Edifício Grandella, 9) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS9 - Bloco C, Chiado, Recuperaçäo do Edifício dos Grandes Armazéns, 10) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS10 Ligacao Pedonal do Patio B, 11) AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS11 Chiado, Estação de Metropolitano Baixa Chiado. AP178.S1.1984.PR02
Description:
The project series documents the Punt en Komma social housing project in The Hague, The Netherlands, with some materials related to the Urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5, Schilderswijk-West. While the records were held in the office’s archives the urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5 was assigned the number 30/80 and Punt en Komma was assigned the number 30/80 A/B (Punt (A) and Komma (B)). The office assigned the date 1984 for this project. In the mid to late1970s The Hague underwent an urban renewal program and in 1980 Adri Duivesteijn became the alderman responsible for this program. Dissatisfied with the results, in the early to mid-1980s Duivesteijn began a campaign to look at urban renewal as a cultural approach, and was interested in the participatory process that Siza incorporated for the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) in Portugal and the Berlin projects submitted to the International Architectural Exhibition Berlin competition (International Bauaustellung, IBA, circa 1979-1987). After taking a trip to Portugal, Duivesteijn invited Siza to speak with residents of Schilderswijk. The urban plan for Schilderswijk was the first part of a redevelopment plan for the 19th century district and included two four story blocks of 106 apartments, named Punt en Komma. Schilderswijk is in the centre of The Hague and is nearby the Haag Spoor train station. The residents are made up of multi-ethnic communities and included immigrants from Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, and Portugal. Similarly to the Berlin projects, Siza was faced with cultural tensions between the residents of the area. The urban plan was to take into account the preservation of the neighborhood's identity while accounting for the changes brought on by multi-ethnic communities. As with the SAAL and Berlin projects there was an element of participation from the residents and included the collaboration of a residents association. In the “Plan of Zone 5 of Schilderswijk Centrum…”, found in this project series [AP178.S1.1984.PR02.024.1, AP178.S1.1984.PR02.024.2], it is outlined that meetings were periodically held with technicians appointed by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing of The Hague, the Housing Cooperative, and each of the designers. Siza’s design for Punt en Komma incorporated elements prevalent in Dutch architecture such as the Haagse Portiek. However, he also included components in his design which accounted for the needs of residents living there at the time. One feature which gained much attention was the incorporation of sliding doors in the apartments. Siza included these doors in his design in consideration of the cultural practices of Muslim families. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials, and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, elevations, sections, and details, as well as axonometric drawings, such as the proposed design for Deelgebied zone 5 (including Punt en Komma) and drawings of the Haagse Porteik. Photographic materials document both Duivesteijn’s trip to Portugal and Siza’s first trip to The Hague and include photographs, negatives, and slides of the built project, as well as slides of drawings. Note that the photographic materials include photographs related to the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk. Textual documentation includes brochures regarding rent increases, a copy of “Stadsvernieuwing als Kulturele Aktiviteit” by Duivesteijn, and information booklets for the residents. Also included are minutes of meeting and correspondence from the Woningbouwvereniging’s-Gravenhage. Among the correspondence are letters regarding construction costs, including a letter from Siza to the local architectural firm Architectengemeenschap Van den Broek en Bakema explaining that he does not wish to modify the detail he specified for the lintels of the Punt building. There is also correspondence from project architect Carlos Castenheira and Duivesteijn and a summary of the meeting between Siza and the Committee of the Corporation for Social Housing (17 April, 1985)[AP178.S1.1984.PR02.025.1] It is important to note that Siza also participated in other projects for this urban renewal program: the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk [AP178.S1.1984.PR03], the Van der Vennepark [AP178.S1.1985.PR01], and the residential settlement in Schilderswijk (Plano de Doedijnstraat [AP178.S1.1989.PR03]). All three of these projects are arranged in separate project series.

Description:
This project series documents the Urban plan for the city centre of Montreuil, France, also known as Coeur de ville. The office archivist identified this project as 24/90. The office assigned the date 1991 to this project. During the sixties and the seventies, the construction of a mall and office towers created a rupture in the downtown of Montreuil and caused traffic problems. Siza was chosen to find architectural and urban solutions to these challenges. Luis Mendes started as a collaborator at Siza's office and finished as the architect in charge for this project. Several other architects helped during the 20 years of the Coeur de ville project, including Laurent Beaudoin, Emanuelle Beaudoin, Michel Corajoud and Christian Devillers. The concept of substitution urbanization was introduced, in order to repair the rupture created in the sixties and seventies and to introduce urban continuity in Montreuil. The Coeur de ville project proposal included a new spacial reorganization, the Victor Hugo housing building, a theater, and public spaces. In 2006, the buildings C1 and C2 were built. The master plan purposes were to readapt the area to the singularity of the territory, reintroduce the cultural and commercial functions of the area, and to create connections between the districts. Due to a change of municipal administration in the middle of the project, only part of the plan was realized, including two housing buildings and part of the urban renewal. Siza received the Grand Prix spécial du jury de l'urbanisme in 2005 for his contribution to the Coeur de Ville project This project series includes two subseries. Plano Centre Ville de Montreuil and Edificio de Habitaçäo Montreuil (Hamo). The Plano Centre Ville de Montreuil documents the master plans and general documentations of the project. The Edificio de Habitaçäo Montreuil documents the housing project of Siza in Montreuil.

This project subseries documents the residential complex Bonjour Tristesse after Siza won the competition for Block 121. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 2/80 A. The office assigned the date 1980 for this project. Among materials for the competition phase are conceptual sketches intermingled with sketches of people, design development drawings including drawings for the model, site plans for the competition site, proposed plans, proposed elevations, and plans for the proposed nursery and school extension. Also included are photographs, negatives, and slides for the competition, and general photographs and negatives of Berlin. Textual documentation includes correspondence from IBA officials, such as Hämer, Kleihues, and Dagmar Tanuschev, as well as letters from Brigitte Cassirer (later Brigitte Fleck). Fleck was responsible for national and international competitions for the Senate of Berlin (1971-1985) and first invited Siza to participate in the IBA competition by entering a design for the Görlitzer Bad swimming pool. Other correspondence included in this project series are letters from Peter Brinkert, Siza’s contact architect in Berlin, in which they discuss the Kita and the Seniors Club Anziani.
