In this large-format book, photographer Yukio Futagawa recounts his pilgrimage to Le Corbusier’s modernist villa in Ahmedabad, India, built between 1951-56. A symbol of the architect’s domestic architecture, the private residence integrates traditional features of local design, such as the double-height living room on the ground level, with key aspects like sun, wind and landscaping. The raw concrete form frames the open character of its interior spaces and the overall plan, a five-level cube divided by beams and slabs.

The three houses – in Osaka, Ashiya (Hyogo), and Tokyo – can be described as symbolic junctures in Ando’s exploration of(...)

The three works selected for this volume on Tadao Ando are not recent in chronological terms. However, the quality of being novel is one of the least appropriate ways to approach the Japanese architect’s work, which is wholly disassociated from this. The three houses – in Osaka, Ashiya (Hyogo), and Tokyo – can be described as symbolic junctures in Ando’s exploration of residential design, with clear differences in their respective scales, plans, and contexts, but with an identical radical approach through which the building’s form reacts to these conditions and transforms them into its intrinsic qualities. Includes an extensive text and photographs by Yukio Futagawa.

Résumé:
These 10 volumes of 'Villages and Towns' series are the result of 10 years of preparation by Yukio Futagawa. White washed houses and streets of villages on Aegean Islands; Italian towns with beautiful squares; cave-dwellings of Andalusian villages; Adriatic towns with their main orientation to the Sea. Many of the villages and towns introduced in this series have been forgotten for centuries, being kept undisturbed by modern progress. They are rare and precious architectural specimens. Spaces and forms which make up these villages and towns are the result of ages of constant improvements by experience, and they have many ideas to offer and warnings to give to today’s architecture.
