A. Jacob Livinson photographs collection
1925-1946?
Collection 45
Collection of photographs received by Abraham Livinson from various sources. Some of the photographs are undated. Those that are dated bear the date of receipt of the print rather than the date of exposure of the negative. The photographs have been organized into 3 series. The first series consists of city views, especially views of Montréal, Québec. The second series contains views of trains and ships and the third series is comprised of views of monuments, statues and other artworks. The third series includes a number of views of monuments designed by Québec artist Louis-Philippe Hébert. With the exception of 4 photographs taken in London, England, the subjects are Canadian. The third series includes letters that were enclosed with photographs sent to Abraham Livinson.
Abraham Jacob Livinson was born in 1888 or 1889 in Montréal. He studied at McGill University (B.A. 1911, B.C.L. 1914, M.A. 1916) and at the University of Montreal. He was a writer, teacher and lecturer who served on committees of several organizations, including the City Improvement League of Montreal. Stamps on several of the photographs in the Livinson collection indicate that he was domiciled in Westmount. A.J. Livinson died in 1966. His papers are held at the McGill University Archives and at the Canadian Jewish Congress Charities Committee National Archives.
The collection was donated to the CCA by the National Archives of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1986.
The textual records of the fonds are in English.
