Project records consist of records documenting the three phases of the Synthetic Landscape project (1995-2000) as worked on by Johan Bettum and OCEAN North. The project was initially developed and submitted in 1995 for the Membrane Design International Competition held in Japan by the Taiyo Kogyo Corporation. The entry showcases a children’s playscape in the setting of Oslo’s Tøyen Park, joining both its urban surroundings and its natural landscape into a synthetic space. Afterwards, the project was exhibited at the Architecture Association (AA) in London, where Johan Bettum and Kivi Sotamaa met. This eventually led to Bettum and Sotamaa collaborating on projects, along with their respective OCEAN teams in Oslo and Helsinki. The Synthetic Landscape project continued as a research project, with a second phase in 1996 and a third phase which ran from 1997 through 2000 and integrated design methods (particle streaming, Channelling Systems) from the work made on the Töölö and Jyväskylä projects. In the third phase, a pavilion was also added to the setting. Aside from one drawing, all records for this project are in a digital format. Drawings and models from phase 1 show parts or the whole of a shell-like structure. A color scheme seems to be associated to the different components of the structure. A report on phases 1 and 2 discusses the use of synthetic and composite materials for the structure, explaining the concept for the site. Phase 2 textual records include a working plan, site charts and program. Additional drawings and models show an evolution in the shape of the landscape. Most records are related to the third phase of Synthetic Landscape. They are largely drawings and models showing textures and coloured grafts used in the design process, section and surfaces studies, as well as site plans. Other files of the third phase consist of animated renderings of Channelling Systems studies within the Synthetic Landscape topology, saved as Quicktime MOV files. Additionally, the third phase of Synthetic Landscape has files related to the FEM (finite element method) analysis process utilized in the project’s engineering. This particular section includes raster images showing vectorial drawings and data appearing to be surface studies. These were likely created with the software Mathematica. The bulk of textual documentation on the project’s scope and outcomes may be found in AP194.S1.1995.PR01.001 for phases 1 and 2, and in AP194.S1.1995.PR01.005 for phase 3. The latter file also contains documentation related to a grant application to The Research Council of Norway; a proposal for a conference and exhibition at the AA; and administrative records such as budgets, correspondence, invoices, progress reports, meeting agendas and minutes. Particle streaming and Channelling Systems approaches were applied in these projects and further developed in the third phase of the Synthetic Landscape project and its Pavilion. The Synthetic Landscape project also featured usage of polymer composite materials. All records are born-digital, except for one 1995 drawing from the Synthetic Landscape project. Records include CAD models, raster and vector images, textual records and animated renderings from Channelling Systems studies. CAD models and drawings show design process of the projects, and range from the abstract (particle streaming) to very detailed plans (Jyväskylä). They were created using form*Z, Microstation, Alias, 3D Studio, AutoCAD and Rhinoceros. Some files were saved in IGES and DXF formats. Most CAD drawings have been saved as raster images. Drawings and models might have been saved in more than one file format. Digital textual records include project descriptions, presentations and reports, budgets and meeting notes, often created using the Microsoft Office software suite. The site for the football stadium was in the Töölö neighbourhood, between a park area including the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, and a residential area. OCEAN North’s entry was a building that would integrate with its natural surroundings while being able to accommodate a variety of activities and events. The structure for Open Arena has three topological surfaces. The first provides stadium access to the players and the public, and includes services such as restaurant, cafeteria, and bars. Its shape aims to integrate with the natural landscape. The second contains the audience seating areas, including VIP and press areas, and aimed to arrange the audience as if it was loosely dispersed on a hillside. The third topological surface consists of the roof. The Töölö Football Stadium marks the introduction of the Channelling Systems process, defining building’s integration to its surroundings and distributing functions across the structure. Records show different stages of the design process and include two digitized photographs of Plexiglas sections that were used to physically explore the design. Digital files are grouped under categories such as Board images, Board lay-out, Graft, Sections, Siteplans, digital model images, scanned plans and site images. This last directory contains digitized photographs of the grounds surrounding the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Attaché au bout de chaque élément est un fil en plastique. Lors de l'exposition "Environ(ne)ment", les éléments furent supendus du plafond pour former le lustre. -- The chandelier is composed of 105 teardrop-shaped elements, each of which is attached to a plastic cord. Each "teardrop" is made of acrylic, and in each one is encased either an organic specimen or a found object collected by Gilles Clément from a "Third Landscape" near the CCA Garden. For the "Environ(ne)ment" exhibition, each teardrop was suspended from the ceiling to form the chandelier.

This project series documents the Imperial Oil Ontario region office in North York, Ontario from 1960-1962. The office identified the project number as 6049. This project consisted of a three-storey, 110,000 square foot building located at the corner of Don Mills Road and Eglington Avenue. The front entrance was accessed from a circular driveway off Wynford Drive, with parking lots on either side that held 330 vehicles. The basement level had storage rooms, machine and boiler rooms, a telephone switch gear room and shipping areas. The first floor included food service areas, offices, locker rooms, and a doctor's office complete with x-ray rooms, treatment areas and a quiet room for female employees, among others. The second floor contained administrative areas for accounting, data control and banking, while the third floor contained more offices. The building's frame consisted of a rectangular steel skeleton faced with concrete panels. The ground level was recessed 20 feet to allow for sidewalks around the building. Concrete columns at this level supported the upper two storeys. The landscaped surroundings include long, fountain-spotted reflecting pools. This project won the silver Massey Medal for Architecture in 1964, as well as an honourable distinction at the International Exhibition of Architects VIII Biennial of São Paula in 1965. The project is recorded through drawings, textual records and a photograph dating from 1961-1970. The drawings are mostly reprographic copies that include plans, sections, elevations, details, schedules and electrical, mechanical and structural drawings. The textual records consist of specifications originally arranged with the drawings. The photograph shows the finished buillding.

This project series documents Phase 2B of work completed for Hasbro Headquarters in Pawtucket, Rhode Island from 1991-1994. The office identified the project number as 9105. This project consisted of interior work for part of the company's headquarters and was the third in a series of projects that the firm would complete for the headquarters. The 300,000 square foot building was predominantly one-storey and located on the block between Saratoga, Grand, London and Newport Avenues. The three projects were known as Main Street, Phase 2A and Phase 2B. Phase 1 was completed in 1986 by Barton Myers Associates with Shirley Blumberg as partner-in-charge. These subsequent projects by KPMB were also headed by Shirley Blumberg and continued the initial style she had established in Phase 1. These projects saw the conversion of a historic brick and masonry mill into the company's new offices. The office structure was inspired by the layout of a Greek town, with a main street running through it. This phase continued the work of Phase 2A and focused mainly on the design of the visitor's entrance. The entrance area was V-shaped, with the wide end at the entrance doors and the narrower end leading guests deeper into the building. Once past this area, the hallway opened like a bubble, wrapping around a large elliptical courtyard in the middle. This courtyard, comprised of glass windows with trees and other landscaping in it, was the most prominent feature of this phase. Materials used throughout the offices included polished concrete, maple, aluminum and perforated metal. The project is recorded through drawings and textual records dating from 1989 to around 1994. The drawings are mostly originals and include sketches, plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, details, and some construction drawings. Many of the drawings focus on the entrance and courtyard. The textual records consist of the project program and schedule.
