Description:
This project series documents the "Rumble" Sofa, a couch designed by Pettena in 1967 and produced in 1968 by Gufram, an Italian seat and furniture manufacturer based in Barolo. The "Rumble" Sofa was part of the furniture at Pettena's studio-home." […] The design of this couch […] derives from the experience of living in a spacious place, originally a 19th century studio for artists, in which the furnishings had to suit the scale of the place and not that of the being." [1] The project series contains sketches, plans and details of the couch, as well as videos and photographs of the couch showing its various possible shapes and usages. It also includes a small wooden model with movable blocks, each block represents one of the cushions of the couch. Description:
This project series documents Pettena's installation entitled "Milite Ignoto". This project is the second of a series of three installations created in 1968 which consisted of large three-dimensional letters, forming words, and made of perishable materials that slowly disintegrated once exposed to the elements. The words "Milite Ignoto" of this installation refers to "another stereotype, typical of hypocritical rhetoric and the ceremonies staged by politicians and generals." [1] This installation was presented outside the Palazzo dei Diamanti, in Ferrara. The project series contains installation photographs of the finished project at the Palazzo dei Diamanti, a drawing of the installation, photographs of a later model of the cardboard word, and project descriptions in English and in Italian. Housing Research
AP144.S2.D67
Description:
File documents Housing Research on flexible, pre-fabricated, short-life housing in the United Kingdom. Much of the material developed for this project was published in "Cedric Price Supplement No. 4", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (October 1971), 619-628; 630, and "Cedric Price Supplement No. 5", 'Architectural Design', vol. 42, (January 1972), 24-29; 38-43. Although the research was sponsored by Cedric Price it is possible that he presented the results to the Ministry of Housing. The published research examines housing's "life patterning" potential within broader social, economic, and historical contexts. Some of the material also relates to Steel House (AP144.S2.D60). Cedric Price developed proposals for two test sites: Rochdale in Greater Manchester and Tilbury in Thurrock, England. Material in this file was produced between 1951 and 1998, but predominantly between 1967 and 1971. File contains material and research by Royston Landau. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, layout, maps, model, photographic materials, presentation panels, and textual records.

Southend Roof
AP144.S2.D85
Description:
File documents an unexecuted design for a suspended inflatable roof over the pedestrian area of High Street in Southend-on-Sea, England, for client David Keddie. Cedric Price and Frank Newby designed a roof system that could respond to adverse weather conditions. The final proposal consists of three inflatable reinforced tubes suspended at intervals from metal posts. The tubes can be staggered irregularly to accommodate variations in the cornice heights and canopies of adjacent buildings. Conceptual sketches show preliminary sections for alternate designs for the roof, and presentation drawings show alternate designs for the roof layout. Other drawings include site plan, street layout plans, and details, including one showing a tensioned pneumatic membrane and connection details to post. Many conceptual sketches and drawings are also included within the textual records. Some material in this file was published in "Southend Roof", 'Architectural Design', October 1972, 596-597, and 'Techniques et Architecture', May-June 1975. Material in this file was produced between 1971 and 1975. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, model, photographic materials, presentation drawings, and textual records.
