Dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken, the Meiji Shrine, located in a forested space in the centre of Tokyo, serves not only as a site of devotion, but also as a cool respite, much like Mount Royal in Montreal, from the heat and humidity of summer.
